Rehoming A Rescue Dog

When adopting a rescue dog, it helps to understand the 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months adjustment guide.

Every dog is different, but this framework can help you recognise what’s normal during the settling-in period and support your dog with patience and confidence.

  • 3 Days to Decompress

Your newly adopted dog may feel overwhelmed, unsure, or overstimulated as they adjust to their new surroundings.

     • They may sleep more than expected or struggle to settle at first.

     • They might not want food, treats, or even much interaction.

     • Keep things calm and predictable.

     • Set gentle boundaries from the start.

     • Give them space to observe and adjust at their own pace.

     • Avoid introducing too many new people, places or experiences.

The goal during these first few days is simple: let them feel safe.

  • 3 Weeks to Understand Routine

By now, your dog will likely be starting to relax and understand daily life in your home.

     • They’ll begin to recognise routines and expectations.

     • Their true personality may start to shine through.

     • Some behaviours may appear as they feel more secure.

     • Continue calm, consistent training and clear guidance.

     • Reach out for advice early if you’re unsure about anything, we’re here to help.

This is the stage where structure and consistency really matter.

  • 3 Months to Feel Truly at Home

Around this time, many rescue dogs:

     • Feel bonded to their new family.

     • Have settled into routine.

     • Show greater confidence and trust.

     • Feel safe and secure in their environment.

By now, you’ll likely see the dog they were always meant to be.
