Our Adoption Process
A few things to note before applying for one of the dogs in our care:
- We
only re-home dogs within a 30-mile radius of the shelter, so we can provide consistent post-adoption support.
- All our dogs begin their journey in a 3-week foster-to-adopt programme, which is a required part of our adoption process. During this time, our behavioural consultant will work closely with you to ensure a smooth transition and provide tailored support.
To apply, please complete the PAWS Adoption Application Form by clicking the “Register Interest” button.
Please answer each question in as much detail as possible to support your application. We require a meet and greet for all our dogs, though some may need a few extra steps. These are outlined on each dog’s profile and discussed further during the adoption process.
What Happens Next
- Submit your application.
- If suitable, our behavioural consultant, Catherine McGowan-Lloyd, will contact you to discuss the dog in more detail.
- You’ll then be invited to a meet-and-greet (by appointment only) with Catherine from All About Dogs, and discuss the dogs' training and behavioural needs in more detail.
Our goal is to support both you and your new dog every step of the way.
Due to the number of applications we receive, we are only able to contact successful applicants.
All dogs are eligible for 5 weeks of free insurance upon rehoming.
Our Adoption Fees
- Puppies up to the age of 6 months - £350.00
- Dogs aged over 6 months old and up to 9 years old - £300.00
- Dogs 9 years old and over- £200.00
This helps to cover some of the vet fees and routine care given to our dogs and helps to ensure we can continue rescuing dogs in the future.
How We Use Your Information
The information you provide on the adoption application will be used by Paws A While Shelter for the purposes of facilitating your application to adopt a dog. We respect your privacy and will keep your information safe and secure, and we will only use in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
Please remember that the assessments and details of each dog we have available are based on any history that we may have been made aware of from previous owner(s) and the behaviour we see here whilst they are in our care at Paws A While Shelter. Once any dog is re-homed, that behaviour may change due to many reasons and the changes the dog has endured may also affect their behaviour.
It is very important that you allow a new dog to overcome as much of the stress it is under, during the early periods of being in a new environment. Dogs that are exposed to lots of new experiences too quickly can often lead to an increase of stress and then associated problem behaviours often surface during this time.
Flo
German Shepherd Cross
Available for adoption
Flo came into our care as a stray and, sadly, was never claimed.
She is vaccinated, flea-treated, wormed and spayed. When Flo arrived, she had an injury to her front left paw. An X-ray showed that her toes had previously been broken and had not healed correctly. She is currently on a joint supplement and is comfortable, but she may be more prone to arthritis in the future. Any adopter will need to monitor her mobility and seek veterinary advice if needed.
Flo is a sensitive girl who is finding kennel life overwhelming, but away from the noise she is calm, affectionate and walks beautifully on lead.
She has grown in confidence during her time with us and has done well in a short foster placement, where she travelled nicely, slept through the night and settled well.
Flo is looking for a quiet, patient home in a peaceful location, ideally with a secure garden and someone around most of the time. With gentle guidance and continued confidence-building, she has so much potential to truly flourish.
Meet and greets are by appointment only, subject to a suitable application.
Eileen
Greyhound
Available for adoption
Eileen is an ex-racing greyhound who is now ready to enjoy the comforts of a calm and loving home.
She is fully vaccinated, flea-treated, wormed and neutered, and is in good general health.
She is a friendly dog who is happy to meet new people. She greets them with a wagging tail and a wiggly bottom. She is a big, strong girl, but she walks nicely on a lead when there are no distractions. She also enjoys running around off the lead in a secure area. Her favourite things are food, toys and spending time with people!
Meet and greets are by appointment only, subject to a suitable application.

Age
2 Years Old
Breed
GSD X Bull Breed
Sex
Female
Ideal Home
- Adult-only household would be ideal
- Could live with children 14+
- No other dogs in the home
- No small animals
- Secure garden to run and play
- Someone home most of the time
- An owner who enjoys training and giving her mental stimulation
Note for Adoption
- History:
Amber was found as a stray and, as she was never claimed, she found her way to us.
- General health and medical information:
Amber is vaccinated, flea-treated, wormed and neutered and is in general good health.
- Rescue environment: Amber was not clean in her rescue kennel and would bark a lot. She was wary of new people or dogs at first, but would quickly become trusting. She walked well with most other dogs and enjoyed time off the lead in our exercise area. She also took part in agility and training sessions.
- Home environment: Amber is currently in the care of one of our volunteers. She has proven to be the ideal companion; she is house-trained and has quickly settled into her new routine. She walks well on a lead and harness, paying close attention to her foster carer when out and about. Amber would suit a home where someone is usually around. Ideally, she would be the only dog in an adult-only household with access to a secure garden where she can run and play safely.
- Teaching and training:
Since she first arrived in our care, we have seen Amber grow in confidence. She quickly learns anything that is taught to her. She excels in scent work and has shown promise in agility, which she enjoys and which is a great way for her to build confidence.
Pete
Available for adoption
Meet and greets are by appointment only, subject to a suitable application.
Age
4 Years Old
Breed
Greyhound
Sex
Male
Ideal Home
- Calm, patient household
- Someone home for most of the day
- Able to build up his time alone gradually
- Secure garden with high fencing (essential)
- No small animals
- Children 14+
- Could potentially live with a calm greyhound following successful meet and greets
Note for Adoption
- History: Pete is an ex-racing greyhound who has spent all his life in kennels, he is now looking for a calm and loving home where he can truly thrive.
- General health and medical information: Pete is vaccinated, flea-treated, wormed, and neutered. He is in good general health.
- Rescue environment: Pete is a friendly dog who gets excited when he meets new people, sometimes jumping up. He wags his tail happily, accepts his harness and lead without any fuss and enjoys his massage sessions. He walks well on the lead and enjoys his time off the lead in our secure exercise area. Pete will chase small creatures if he gets the chance, but he generally walks nicely with the other dogs.
- Home environment: Pete had a short term foster out of kennels but found it difficult to adapt to his new environment, he would become startled by sudden noise both inside and outside of the house. In the first few days Pete would toilet in the house but did quickly learn to toilet out in the garden. Pete was destructive when left alone so would suit someone who is home for most of the day and who would be willing to take it slowly and build up his confidence at being left alone. A secure garden with high fences is essential.
- Teaching and training: When it comes to training, Pete is a superstar. We are teaching him that good things happen when he keeps all four paws on the floor instead of jumping up. He has quickly learnt whistle recall and responds well to scent work games, which help him to relax and build his confidence.
Rizzo
AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION
Meet and greets are by appointment only, subject to a suitable application.
Age
4 Years Old
Breed
Border Collie
Sex
Female
Ideal Home
- Experienced working-dog owner
- Calm, structured household
- Semi-rural or rural location (essential)
- Adult-only home
- No other dogs
- Large, secure garden
- Happy to attend multiple meet-and-greets
Note for Adoption
- History: Rizzo was surrendered to the rescue after her previous family realised they couldn’t meet her needs for stimulation, time, and exercise. The busy household environment was overwhelming for her, and she spent a lot of her time separated from the family. Rizzo responds well to her current positive training after previous bad experiences.
- General health and medical information: Rizzo is vaccinated, flea treated, wormed and neutered and is in good general health.
- Rescue environment: We have found that Rizzo is an independent dog who has adapted well to life in kennels. She remains calm while waiting for her turn to go for a walk, and she walks nicely on a lead. She enjoys running off the lead in our secure exercise compound, where she likes to sniff, play, run and relax. However, she can be sensitive to noise and unfamiliar situations, as well as to people and items such as vacuums, vehicles, TVs and wheeled objects, so continued work will be needed to help with this.
- Home environment: Rizzo went out on a short-term foster placement. Having lived in kennels for a long time, she found it difficult to adapt to a busy home environment. She would bark and scratch if she heard unfamiliar noises and struggled to settle. She would snap when things became too much for her. Ideally, she needs a calm, structured, semi-rural home with an experienced working dog owner. Understanding her herding instincts, intelligence and sensitivity is key to helping her settle in and flourish. She will also need a large, secure garden where she can play, explore and relax safely.
- Teaching and training: Rizzo responds well to reward-based, positive training, which helps her gain confidence and adapt to new environments. She has been known to be possessive over certain items so we are teaching her how to share. She would benefit from structured positive training sessions, consistent routines, and plenty of mental stimulation.
Oaty
Available for adoption
Meet and greets are by appointment only, subject to a suitable application.
Age
5 Years Old
Breed
Cockapoo
Sex
Male
Ideal Home
- Adult-only household
- Quiet, low-visitor home
- No other dogs or cats
- Patient adopter willing to build trust gradually
- Secure garden for enrichment and exploration
- Happy to attend multiple meet-and-greets
Note for Adoption
- History: Although Oaty had a difficult start in life, he has grown into a confident, affectionate and intelligent dog with time, patience and positive reinforcement, especially with those he trusts. However, he may still growl or snap if he feels uncomfortable.
- General health and medical information: Oaty is vaccinated, flea-treated, wormed and neutered. He has previously suffered from a skin condition which required veterinary treatment. This has been managed with ongoing treatment and support, and he is currently in good health. We will provide potential adopters with full medical information.
- Rescue environment: When Oaty first arrived, he found it difficult to adjust to kennel life, largely because of a negative experience he had had with crate confinement in the past. Thanks to the patience of our volunteers, who worked to build his trust, he can now tolerate his kennel. For this reason, we do not recommend keeping Oaty in a crate in a home environment. Oaty can be wary of strangers, particularly with regard to physical contact and personal space. He has been muzzle-trained for grooming and vet visits, which he copes with well when he is with familiar handlers. Oaty is usually relaxed around other dogs, but if they get too close or he feels threatened, he'll let them know with a growl.
- Home environment: Oaty would thrive in a quiet, adult-only home, free from resident or visiting children. He needs adopters who can commit to building a trusting relationship with him while encouraging his independence to grow. He would also benefit from a secure garden where he can explore and play.
- Teaching and training: Oaty is intelligent and active, and he benefits greatly from mental and physical stimulation. When he arrived at kennels, he was obsessed with playing with balls. We have helped him by replacing this with positive reward-based training sessions, scent games, puzzle toys and sniffy walks. These activities have helped to reduce his stress levels, prevent boredom, and boost his confidence.
Jasper
Available for adoption
Meet and greets are by appointment only, subject to a suitable application.
Age
3 years Old
Breed
Shih Tzu
Sex
Male
Ideal Home
- Quiet, adult-only household
- No other pets
- Owner who is home most of the day
- Adopter who is patient and understands body language
- Secure garden for safe outdoor time
Note for Adoption
- History: Jasper missed out on much of his socialisation period before he came to us. He didn't get to meet other dogs or people, and his world was kept small.
- General health and medical information: Jasper is vaccinated, flea-treated, wormed, and neutered and is in general good health. He will require regular grooming to keep his coat healthy and in good condition.
- Rescue environment: Jasper gets stressed in kennels, especially while he is waiting for his turn, and he will bark. However, he walks nicely on the lead, and we have worked hard to help him feel more comfortable around other dogs. He can walk at a distance from dogs he knows, but he will bark and lunge at unfamiliar dogs. He will need help with this in his new home, as well as with feeling comfortable when left alone. He can be sensitive to too much touch and has been known to snap. He can also become overstimulated by certain toys, so keeping him calm is crucial in these situations.
- Home environment: Jasper would thrive in a quiet, adult-only home with an owner who is usually at home, as he barks if left alone. Ideally, he should be the only pet in the home and have access to a secure garden where he can run, play and explore. It is important that he is walked at quiet times of day, when there is little chance of him seeing other dogs, to help keep his stress levels down. He needs an adopter who is patient and understands dog body language, and who is willing to continue building his confidence through positive training.
- Teaching and training: Jasper is an intelligent dog who is eager to learn and quickly picks up new things. He is happy to interact with people once he knows them, but he can become very attached, so we have been helping him to become more confident when he is on his own. He can also become overstimulated easily, especially when it comes to toys, and will snap. He will need an extremely patient owner who avoids putting him in stressful situations during training.
Baxter
RESERVED
Age
8 Years Old
Breed
Shih Tzu
Sex
Male
Key Points
- He is not suitable to live with cats.
- No children under the age of 14.
- He can become obsessed with certain toys.
- He is not suitable to live with other dogs.
Note for Adoption
- History: Baxter has had multiple homes in his life. Unfortunately, after a year with one family, he found his way back to us due to reports of excessive barking. He would bark when he heard noises outside or at the doorbell, and when people left the room. This got worse around fireworks season. This caused stress for everyone, including Baxter.
- General health and medical information: Baxter is vaccinated, neutered, wormed and flea-treated and is in good general health.
- Rescue environment: Thanks to his fun-loving, young-at-heart personality, Baxter has become a firm favourite with volunteers. While in kennels, we have found that he is generally quiet and clean in our care. He walks nicely on a lead, has good recall, and relishes any opportunity to learn - especially when toys, food, or praise are involved! He ignores calm dogs but will bark and lunge at those that bark at him. He has previously been fostered and was generally calm in the house and when travelling in the car.
- Home environment: Baxter would thrive in a quiet, adult-only home with a calm and predictable routine. Due to his sensitivity to busy environments and noise, he needs a patient, stable household that can provide him with gentle encouragement and help him to relax.
- Teaching and training:
Baxter loves training sessions and enjoys using his brain. He learns quickly and is motivated by fun, food and praise. Hopefully, continuing this gentle, reward-based training approach in his new home, focusing on helping him to relax by sniffing rather than playing high-energy games such as throwing balls or toys, will help him to adjust.
Meet and greets will need to be arranged by appointment only, subject to a suitable adoption application.
