Our Adoption Process

A few things to note before applying for one of the dogs in our care:

  • We only re-home dogs within a 30-mile radius of the shelter, so we can provide consistent post-adoption support.
  • All our dogs begin their journey in a 3-week foster-to-adopt programme, which is a required part of our adoption process. During this time, our behavioural consultant will work closely with you to ensure a smooth transition and provide tailored support.

To apply, please complete the PAWS Adoption Application Form by clicking the “Register Interest” button.

Please answer each question in as much detail as possible to support your application. We require a meet and greet for all our dogs, though some may need a few extra steps. These are outlined on each dog’s profile and discussed further during the adoption process.

What Happens Next

  1. Submit your application.
  2. If suitable, our behavioural consultant, Catherine McGowan-Lloyd, will contact you to discuss the dog in more detail.
  3. You’ll then be invited to a meet-and-greet (by appointment only) with Catherine from All About Dogs, and discuss the dogs' training and behavioural needs in more detail.

Our goal is to support both you and your new dog every step of the way.

Due to the number of applications we receive, we are only able to contact successful applicants.

All dogs are eligible for 5 weeks of free insurance upon rehoming.

Our Adoption Fees

  • Puppies up to the age of 6 months - £350.00
  • Dogs aged over 6 months old and up to 9 years old - £300.00
  • Dogs 9 years old and over- £200.00

This helps to cover some of the vet fees and routine care given to our dogs and helps to ensure we can continue rescuing dogs in the future.

How We Use Your Information

The information you provide on the adoption application will be used by Paws A While Shelter for the purposes of facilitating your application to adopt a dog. We respect your privacy and will keep your information safe and secure, and we will only use in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

Please remember that the assessments and details of each dog we have available are based on any history that we may have been made aware of from previous owner(s) and the behaviour we see here whilst they are in our care at Paws A While Shelter. Once any dog is re-homed, that behaviour may change due to many reasons and the changes the dog has endured may also affect their behaviour.

It is very important that you allow a new dog to overcome as much of the stress it is under, during the early periods of being in a new environment. Dogs that are exposed to lots of new experiences too quickly can often lead to an increase of stress and then associated problem behaviours often surface during this time.

Hi! I’m Eileen, I spent my early life in racing kennels, and now I’m looking for a calm, loving home where I can truly relax and enjoy being a pet.

I’m a friendly girl who absolutely loves meeting people. Sometimes I get a little excited and might jump up to say hello, but it’s only because I’m so happy to see you! I greet everyone with a wagging tail and a big smile.

I walk nicely on my harness and lead with the volunteers and really enjoy getting out for my walks. When I’m in our secure exercise area I love having a run and stretching my legs.

Because I’m a greyhound, I do have a strong instinct to chase small animals, so I wouldn’t be able to live with small furries.

I recently had a day out at one of our volunteers’ homes and I did really well. I travelled nicely in the car, explored my new surroundings and then enjoyed a lovely long nap afterwards (greyhounds are very good at that!). I did try to see what was on the kitchen counters as I’m a curious girl, but with a bit of guidance I’m sure I’ll quickly learn the house rules.

Because I can jump quite high, I’ll need a secure garden with fencing around 6ft high so I can play safely.

I love treats, toys and learning new things, so training sessions and enrichment games are great fun for me. With a little structure and positive training, I’m sure I’ll settle beautifully into home life.

I would be happiest in a home with children aged 14+ where I can enjoy plenty of companionship, gentle guidance and lots of comfy naps.

If you’re looking for a sweet, affectionate girl who will make you smile every day, I might just be the one for you.

Meet and greets are by appointment only, subject to a suitable application.

Hello! My name is Flo, I’m looking for a special home where I can continue building my confidence and enjoying life.

Once I get to know and trust someone, I adore spending quiet time with my person and I’m especially fond of a gentle doggy massage - it’s so relaxing that I often fall asleep!

I was found as a stray before coming into rescue, so not much is known about my early life. When I first arrived, I found kennel life quite overwhelming and struggled to settle. With time, patience and support from the volunteers here, I’ve made lovely progress and now cope much better and can relax once I’ve had a chance to settle.

Kennels can still be a bit busy for me and I much prefer being with people. When I go out for walks I’m very good on the lead and I love exploring all the interesting smells around me. Long or busy walks aren’t really my thing, but gentle wandering and sniffing help me relax and feel safe.

When I first arrived it was discovered that I had an old injury to my front paw where the toes had been broken before I came into care. They healed before I arrived but not perfectly, so I take a joint supplement and my future family will just need to keep an eye on it as I get older. It doesn’t stop me enjoying life, I just prefer shorter, relaxed walks.

I’m a clever girl who really enjoys training, scent work and enrichment games. These activities have helped boost my confidence and give my brain something positive to focus on. After a nice walk or training session I’m happiest settling down with one of my favourite chews (beef lung is the best!).

I can sometimes mouth when I feel overwhelmed, but the team here has been helping me learn better ways to cope and I’m making great progress.

I recently went to stay in a short-term foster home and did really well. I travelled nicely in the car, slept through the night in my own bed and only had one small toilet accident while I was settling in.

Because I’m still building my confidence, I would be happiest living somewhere quiet and semi-rural or rural. I’d also love a secure garden where I can relax and explore safely. I would prefer to be the only pet in the home, and I’m looking for a home with children aged 14+.

I may need a patient and understanding home, but in return you’ll get a loyal, affectionate girl who loves nothing more than cuddles, quiet companionship and sniffy adventures.

Meet and greets are by appointment only, subject to a suitable application.

Hi! I’m Amber, I’m looking for a special home where I can continue building my confidence and enjoying life.

I came into rescue as a stray, so not much is known about my early life. When I first arrived, I found kennel life quite overwhelming and would sometimes bark or spin when I could hear people nearby.

Thankfully I was given the chance to move into a wonderful foster home, and that’s where I’ve really started to show my true personality. In the home I’ve settled in beautifully. I’m calm around the house, sleep soundly through the night and have proven to be a lovely companion. I’m house-trained and have quickly adapted to a home routine.

I really enjoy my walks and generally walk nicely on my lead and harness, although I can be a little strong at times because I have plenty of energy and enthusiasm for exploring the world.

I can be a little underconfident at first and I’m quite particular about who I build a bond with, so I will need an adopter who is happy to give me time and patience while we get to know each other. Once I feel comfortable though, I’m incredibly loyal and a wonderful companion.

I’m a very bright girl and absolutely love training. I have fantastic focus and really enjoy learning new things. I particularly love activities that allow me to use my nose, like scent work and enrichment games, and I’ve also shown promise in agility!

When I’m off lead in a secure space, I enjoy stretching my legs and having a good run around. I also love playing with my favourite soft, squeaky toys. After a bit of fun, I’m more than happy settling down with a natural chew, ostrich bones are a particular favourite of mine!

I’m looking for a home where someone is around most of the time, as I really enjoy companionship and being part of the household. Because I like my own space, I would prefer to be the only dog in the home and wouldn’t be able to live with small animals. I could live in a home with children aged 14+, although an adult-only home may suit me best. A secure garden would also be important for me so I can run and play safely.

With the right person by my side, I know I’ll truly flourish and be the best best-friend!

Hi there! My name is Pete and I’m searching for a calm and loving home where I can learn what life is like outside the kennels.

I spent my whole life in racing kennels before coming into rescue, so many everyday things are still quite new to me. I’m a friendly boy who really enjoys being around people and I love spending time with the volunteers here. Gentle fuss and attention are some of my favourite things.

Sometimes the world can feel a little overwhelming and I can be a sensitive soul, but with patience and encouragement I’ve been making lovely progress.

I can get a bit excited when I meet new people and might jump up to say hello, but the team are helping me learn that keeping all four paws on the floor is the best way to greet my friends.

I enjoy my walks and happily wear my harness and lead. I also love having a good run around in the secure exercise area. When it’s time to relax, I’m very happy settling down with a natural chew or spending some quiet time with my people.

One thing I’ve discovered while being here is how much I love scent work games. Using my nose has really helped build my confidence, and because I’m very food motivated I’m always keen to learn new things. I’ve even learnt whistle recall!

Because I’m a greyhound, I do have a strong instinct to chase small animals, so I wouldn’t be able to live with small furries. I could potentially live with a calm greyhound following successful introductions.

I did spend some time in a foster home where I started learning about life in a house. Some things, like sudden noises, did startle me, and I found being left alone quite difficult and became destructive when I was worried. Because of this, I’m looking for a home where someone is around most of the day and who can help me gradually build confidence being left alone.

A secure garden with high fencing will be important for me so I can safely stretch my legs and explore. I’m looking for a calm, patient home with children aged 14+ where I can continue learning at my own pace.

With time, patience and understanding, I know I’ll be a relaxed and happy dog who simply enjoys being with his people.

Hello! I’m Rizzo, I’m a clever girl who loves training, football games and having a job to do. I’m a bright and active girl looking for a calm home where my clever brain and natural instincts can really shine.

I came into rescue when my previous family realised that their busy household wasn’t the right environment for me. Life there was quite overwhelming and I wasn’t able to get the structure, exercise and mental stimulation that I needed. Since coming into rescue, I’ve been working with the volunteers using positive training and have been making lovely progress.

Training sessions are one of my favourite things, and I’m always keen to learn something new. I love activities that keep my brain busy, and I especially enjoy herding a football, which is a great outlet for my natural collie instincts.

I also enjoy my walks and like spending time exploring and sniffing the world around me. In a secure space I love to run, play and relax.

Like many sensitive dogs, loud or unfamiliar noises can sometimes make me a little unsure. Things like vacuums, vehicles or wheeled objects can be a bit worrying for me at first. With patience and positive training, I’ve already made great progress in building my confidence.

I enjoy the company of people once I know them and trust them, although I’m not the sort of dog who needs constant fuss. I’m happiest when I have something to focus on and a clear routine to follow.

Because busy environments can feel overwhelming for me, I’m looking for a calm, structured home in a semi-rural or rural location where life moves at a gentler pace. I would do best as the only dog in the home, in an adult-only household, with someone who understands working breeds and enjoys training and enrichment activities. A large, secure garden will also be important for me so I can safely run, play and practise my favourite games.

I can sometimes be a little protective over certain items, so the team are helping me learn how to share through positive training.

I’m a clever, thoughtful dog who thrives when given the right balance of structure, learning and exercise. With the right person to guide me, I know I’ll continue to grow in confidence.

Hello! My name is Oaty and I’m a clever boy looking for a calm home where I can build a strong bond with my person and keep my busy brain active.

I didn’t have the easiest start in life, but with time, patience and kindness I’ve grown into a much more confident and engaging dog. The volunteers here say I’m one of the most intelligent dogs at the shelter, and I absolutely love learning new things.

Training sessions are one of my favourite parts of the day. I get very wiggly with excitement when I’m working, especially when it comes to scent work and puzzle games. Using my brain really helps me relax and keeps me happy.

When I first come out of my kennel I can be a little excitable while I burn off some energy, but once I’ve had a chance to settle I walk very nicely on the lead and enjoy exploring the world at my own pace.

I’m usually quite focused on my person when we’re out and about and don’t pay too much attention to other dogs or people - unless they happen to have food!

I prefer fuss on my own terms and appreciate people who respect my space. Because of this, I’m looking for a quiet, adult-only home with few visitors and no visiting children, where I can feel safe and relaxed.

When I first arrived, kennel life was quite difficult for me due to some negative experiences with crate confinement in the past. With patience from the volunteers I’ve learned to cope with my kennel, but I would prefer not to use a crate in my future home.

I can sometimes feel uncomfortable if my boundaries are pushed, and I may growl or snap to let people know I need space. For this reason, I’m looking for a patient adopter who understands dog body language and is happy to build trust gradually.

I’ve been muzzle-trained for grooming and vet visits, which helps keep everyone comfortable and safe, and I cope well with this when I’m with people I know and trust.

I would need to be the only dog in the home and couldn’t live with cats or small animals, but I’m generally happy to focus on my person rather than other dogs when we’re out on walks. A secure garden would be wonderful so I can explore and play. I love to relax with one of my favourite chews.

I’m a bright boy who is looking for someone who will give me time to settle and enjoy learning together.

Hello! I’m Jasper, I’m a sensitive and intelligent Shih Tzu looking for a very experienced, adult-only home.

I need to be honest, I have snapped in previous homes when I’ve felt overwhelmed. This has usually happened when I’ve been given too much attention or handling. I might look like I want fuss, but I cope much better with a calm, hands-off approach and clear boundaries.

Because of this, I need an owner who understands dog behaviour, can read my body language, and will respect my space. I’m not a typical lap dog and I’m not suitable for homes wanting a very affectionate, hands-on companion.

I need to be the only pet, as I don’t like other dogs, and I’ll need quiet walking areas or a secure garden with minimal dog contact.

A calm home with very few visitors is important for me, as busy environments can be overwhelming. I enjoy being near my person and learning new things, but everything needs to be kept low-key and predictable. I’m also still working on being left alone and will need ongoing support.

I won’t be the right fit for most homes, but with the right, experienced person who understands me and is willing to listen, I can build a strong and loyal bond.
